"One mistake, and you were dead for a hell of a long time. There was a poster in our pilot's ready room that outlined the Ten Commandments for Fighter Pilots. These commandments were disigned to keep a guy from getting his hide punched full of bullet holes, and I made a special effort to memorize every one of them."
-William R. Dunn, from "Fighter Pilot: The First American Ace of World War II"

No.71 P/O Bill Dunn The first American ace of the war, who was only recognized as such, after a rechecking of the records over two decades later.
         TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR FIGHTER PILOTS
1. Never fly straight and level for more than 30 seconds in the combat area.
2. Always keep a sharp look-out for enemy fighters. Keep your finger out and your head on a swivel. Watch for the enemy in the sun.
3. Height gives you the initiative. Don't waste it.
4. Always turn and face the attackng enemy.
5. Make your decisions promplty. It is better to act quickly, even though your tactics are not the best.
6. When diving to attack, always leave a portion of your formation above to act as top cover.
7. Wait until you see the whites of your enemies eyes. Fire short bursts of one or two seconds, and only when your gunsight is definately  "on" the target.
8. While shooting, think of nothing else. Brace the whole of your body, have both hands on the control stick, concentrate on your gunsight and the target.
9. Go in quickly-punch hard-get out!
10. Initiative, aggression, air discipline, and team work are words that mean something in air fighting.
